José Baselga
M.D. graduated from the University of Barcelona in 1982 and specialized as an internist and oncologist
in 1989 at the State University of New York and at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York,
where he subsequently worked in the Breast/Gynecology Oncology Service until 1996.
Since 1996 he has been
Chief of the Medical Oncology Department and Coordinator of Medical Oncology, Clinical Hematology and
Radiotherapy at the Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, and Professor of Medicine at the Universidad
Autonoma of Barcelona, Spain.
Alberto Costa
M.D. graduated from the University of Milan in 1976 and specialized as an oncologist at the
University of Genoa. In 1982 he was appointed Director and Secretary General of the European School of Oncology
(ESO).
From 1989 to 1994 he has been Secretary General of the European Organization for Research and Treatment
of Cancer (EORTC) and from 1992 to 1993 Assistant Director of the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan.
From
1994 to 2000 he has been Deputy Director of the Breast Cancer Division and Head of the Education and Formation
Unit of the European Institute of Oncology, Milan. Since 2000 he has been Head of the Breast Surgery Department
of the Maugeri Foundation, Pavia.

Filippo de Braud
M.D. obtained his Medical Degree in 1984 and the Specialization in Oncology in 1988 from
the University of Milan. Since December 2000 he has been Director of the Clinical Pharmacology and New Drugs
Development Unit at the European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy.
He is a member of several professional
societies. During his training and earlier work experiences he has been involved in basic and clinical research
at Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori of Milan, the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine of London, the Wayne State
University of Detroit and the Institut Gustave-Roussy of Paris.
Maurizio D'Incalci
M.D. graduated from the University of Milan in 1977
and specialized in pharmacology and oncology. He worked in the Laboratory
of Molecular Pharmacology at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, USA.
Since 1986 he has been chief of the Laboratory of Cancer Chemotherapy
and since 1996 Head of the Department of Oncology at the Mario Negri
Institute in Milan.
He has been President of the Pharmacology and Molecolar Mechanisms Group, of the New Drug Development Coordinating Committee and of the
Research Division of the European Organization for Research and Treatment
of Cancer (EORTC).
Since 1994 he has been on the EORTC Board. He is on
the Steering Committee of the EORTC-Cancer Research Campaign (CRC)-NCI
for coordinating the development of new anticancer agents in Europe and USA.
Maria Grazia Donelli
Ph.D. obtained her degree in biological sciences in
1965 and specialized in pharmacology research at the Mario Negri Institute
of Milan.
From 1971 to 1986 she has been chief of the Laboratory of Cancer
Chemotherapy at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan and since 1986 she has
worked with a Special Unit of that Laboratory.
Since 1981 she has been a
Lecturer in Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Medicine, University of
Milan.
Luca Gianni
M.D. obtained his degree from the University
of Milan in 1976. From 1980 to 1983 he was Visiting Fellow at the section of Biochemical Pharmacology, Clinical
Pharmacology Branch, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, USA. From 1983 to 1992 he has worked as a consultant to the Clinical Pharmacology Branch, NCI,
NIH, USA.
From 1983 to date he has been Head of the Laboratory of Clinical Pharmacology of the Division of
Medical Oncology at the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan.
From 1983 to 1991 he has been a Staff Member
of the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori of Milan, from 1991 to August 1998 Associate Director, and from August 1998
to date Head of the Medical Oncology A.
Raffaella Giavazzi
Ph.D. obtained her degree in biological sciences (1978) and specialized in pharmacology at
the University of Milan.
From 1981 to 1983 she has been a post-doctoral fellow in the Cancer Metastasis and
Treatment Laboratory, NCI-Frederick Cancer Research, USA and from 1983 to 1985 Assistant Professor at the
Department of Cell Biology of M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, University of Texas, Houston, TX.
From 1986 she has been Head of the Cancer Metastasis Treatment Unit and since 1993 has been Head of the
Laboratory of Biology and Treatment of Metastasis at the Mario Negri Institute in Bergamo.
Cristiana Sessa
M.D. graduated at the University of Milan in 1978 and obtained a
post-doctoral degree in pharmacological research at the Mario Negri Institute of Milan.
Since 1989 she has
been Head of the Phase I-II Unit and Pharmacology and since 1997 Vice-Head of the Cantonal
Dept. of Medical Oncology, Bellinzona and Lugano, Switzerland. She is an active member of
the European Cancer Study Group-EORTC (secretary from 1987 to 1990).
Silvia Marsoni
M.D. graduated at the University of Milan in 1977 and in 1979 she obtained a
post-doctoral degree in pharmacological research at the Mario Negri Institute, Milan. From
1979 to 1985 she has worked as Chief at the Investigational Drug Branch of the National Cancer
Institute, Bethesda, USA.
Since 1985 she has worked at the Mario Negri Institute in Milan as
Head of the Cancer Clinical Trials Unit and subsequently as Chief of the Laboratory of Cancer
Clinical Epidemiology.
From 1991 to 1997 she has been Scientific Secretary of the ACRO Project
(Clinical Applications of Oncological Research) sponsored by the Italian National Research
Council. Since 1998 she has been Director of SENDO.
Graziella Pratesi
Ph.D. obtained her degree in biological sciences in 1970 at the University of
Milan. Since 1973 she has worked at the Division of Experimental Oncology B at the Istituto
Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan.
She was a post-doctoral fellow during the first two years, then in
1975 she became Assistant Professor and from 1992 she has been Vice Director of the same
Division.
From 1981 to 1982 she has been a visiting fellow at the Memorial Sloan Kettering
Cancer Center in New York.
Natale Cascinelli
MD born in Milan, Italy, February 23, 1939. Degree in General Surgery in 1970.
He has been Scientific Director at the National Cancer Institute of Milan since 1998. He is Member of the
National Oncologic Committee of the Italian Ministry of Health. He has been Elected Member of the Executive
Board of the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI) since 1999. He has been Secretary of the
European Economic Interest Grouping – Liaison Network for Cancer (EEIG-LINC) since 2000.
He has acted as Coordinator of the Scientific Directors of the Italian Research Institutes since 2001
and as Coordinator of the Working Group about First-rate Facilities and Network on European scale in the field
of Bio-safety and Biotechnology in the Subcommittee “Oncology” of the Italian Presidency of the Council of
Ministers since 2002. He acted as Secretary of the “VI European Conference on Clinical Oncology and Cancer
Nursing (ECCO 6)” – Florence (Italy), 27-31 October 1991. He chaired the “5th World Conference on Melanoma”,
Venice (Italy), February 28-March 3, 2001. He is the author of 377 scientific publications.

Franco Cavalli
M.D. born in 1942, lives in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland with his wife and 7
children. He received his medical degree from the Medical School of the University of Bern, where he had
also most of his professional training which included also an educational period in Italy, Belgium and the UK.
In 1978 he received the Ph.D. degree and in 1986 the professorship at the Medical School in Bern.
He is currently Director of the Oncology Institute of Southern Switzerland in Bellinzona.
He is the author and co-author of more than 400 scientific papers and has received numerous awards in
different countries.
Silvio Garattini
M.D, Ph.D. founder in 1963 and director of the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological
Research. Professor Garattini is the founder of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of
Cancer (EORTC), chairman of the UICC Committee on Antitumoral Chemotherapy, the European Organization
for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), the European Society of Biochemical Pharmacology.
He served
as a member of the Italian National Research Council (CNR) Committee on Biology and Medicine, the
National Health Council, the Committee for Italian Research Policy, set up by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers,
the Commissione Unica del Farmaco (CUF), and is a consultant to the World Health Organization.
He is currently a member of the Committees for Proprietary Medicinal Products (CPMP) of the European
Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA), Member of the CEPR (Committee of Experts of
Research Policy) at the Ministry for the University and Scientific and Technological Research, President of
the V Section of the Consiglio Superiore della Sanità , Rome. Member of the Board of Istituto Superiore di
Sanità, Rome.
Silvio Garattini is a Fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement
of Science, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Pharmaceutical Medicine), London, and a
member and President of numerous other Italian and international scientific societies. He has received many
awards for his work, including the French Legion d’Honneur and the Commendatore della Repubblica Italiana,
and holds honorary degrees from the Universities of Bialystok in Poland, and Barcelona in Spain.
Garattini’s publications in Italian and in English in international scientific journals, and texts on pharmacology,
run into the hundreds.

Umberto Veronesi
M.D. is a surgeon who has devoted the greater part of his professional life to exploring
the paths of research with the aim of improving the treatment and the quality of life for cancer patients. It
was he who first contributed at the National Cancer Institute in Milan to the development of the conservative
treatment of breast cancer and melanoma.
In the last twenty years he has devoted his interests to the prevention of breast cancer.
He has been President of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) till 1982, of the European Organization
for Research and Treatment of Cancer from 1985 to 1988, and of the Federation of European Cancer Societies
(FECS) from 1991 to 1993. He was the founder and first President of the European Cancer Societies of
Mastology.
He was awarded “Honoris Causa” in Medicine from the Argentinean (Buenos Aires, Cordoba),
Brazilian (Rio Grande do Sul), Greek (Athens) and Belgian (Antwerp) Universities. In 1994 he was appointed
President of the “Committee of Cancer Experts” of the Commission of European Communities.
Veronesi is the author of more than 600 scientific publications and 10 Oncological Treatises.
Scientific Director of the European Institute of Oncology – Milan, Italy from May 1994 to April
2000.
He was entrusted with the task of Minister of Health in the Italian Government from April 2000 to June 2001.
From July 1, 2001 he has resumed the position of Scientific Director of the European Institute of Oncology.
Veronesi has also dedicated his energies to initiating and promoting educational enterprises for the training
of oncologists. In 1982 he founded the European School of Oncology, which has since become a point of
reference throughout Europe and, in particolar, an advisory body of the European Community. The European
Society of Surgical Oncology, also founded by Umberto Veronesi, has, likewise, undertaken an educational
line which follows well in the wake of the guidelines traced by the School.
